The Magazines

The American Spectator (1967–present) is a long-running conservative magazine that blends investigative reporting with pointed commentary. Known for its willingness to challenge political orthodoxies, it brings a sharp, often provocative voice to debates about power, policy, and culture.

Americas Quarterly (2007–present) is rooted in Latin America, where policymakers, journalists, and business leaders write from inside the story. Covering politics, economics, and culture across the region, it offers a forward-looking view of the Americas shaped by those living its realities.

Commentary (1945–present) has helped define American intellectual life for generations. Its essays move across politics, culture, and religion, bringing together leading thinkers to engage the questions shaping public life at home and abroad.

Commonweal (1924–present) is an independent Catholic journal that opens a space for thoughtful engagement between faith and the modern world. Its essays and commentary explore religion, politics, and culture with a tone that is reflective, questioning, and deeply grounded in lived experience.

Dissent (1954–present), a quarterly magazine of politics and ideas, is rooted in democratic socialism and committed to critical inquiry. Its pages bring together voices examining inequality, labor, and democracy. It offers analysis that is both principled and open-ended.

Harper’s (1850–present) is one of America’s oldest magazines, known for its distinctive mix of long-form journalism, essays, and literary writing. It offers deeply reported stories and reflections on politics, culture, and the contradictions of modern life.

LaFollette’s Magazine (1909–1929) was closely tied to the early Progressive movement and the reform politics of Robert M. La Follette Sr. It carried arguments for labor rights, government accountability, and democratic reform at a time when those ideas were reshaping American public life. Beginning in 1929, LaFollette’s Magazine was rebranded The Progressive (1929–present), which was and has been committed to peace, civil liberties, and social justice. Its reporting and commentary continue to examine power, policy, and the public good across national and global contexts.

The New Leader (1924–2010), a magazine of politics and culture, played a significant role in twentieth-century debates over democracy and totalitarianism. Its pages brought together writers grappling with the ideological tensions of their time, particularly in the context of the Cold War.

The New York Review of Books (1963–present) is where books open the door to larger conversations. Its essays, written by leading writers and scholars, move from literature into politics, history, and global affairs, turning criticism into a form of public debate.

Orion (1982–present) looks beyond headlines to explore how we live in relationship with the natural world. Through essays, reporting, and storytelling, it brings together voices reflecting on place, community, and the environmental challenges of our time.

Washington Examiner (2005–present) is a news and opinion publication focused on politics, policy, and government. With daily reporting and commentary, it follows the movement of ideas and decisions through Washington, offering readers a close view of national affairs.

Washington Monthly (1969–present) is dedicated to understanding how the government works and how it might work better. Through investigative reporting and analysis, it examines institutions, policy outcomes, and the mechanics of public service.

The Weekly Standard (1995–2018) became a central voice in conservative political thought, particularly on foreign policy and national security. Its reporting and essays helped shape debates during a pivotal period in American politics.

Cite with confidence, knowing that every item has a unique permanent Content Object Identifier (COI), so that even if an item disappears from the web, your citation will link to a preserved copy—with no more dead links.
